Nuuk Airport FAQs

Can they adjust the camera angle or move the weather bug to an upper corner?

These are “working” cameras and their job is to provide visual weather confirmation to aviation professionals in a climate that can change rapidly. Blocking a part of the sky is not an option. Only the primary users can determine the angle of view.

What is all the construction at Nuuk and when will it be completed?

Nuuk is getting a new airport terminal, larger apron and a longer runway. The new terminal went into operation on July 17, 2024. The runway length is expanding from 900 to 2200 meters and will go into operation in late Nov 2024. See this old-vs-new video.

Why is there no sound or ATC?

European privacy laws prohibit sound recording in public & work areas.

Why is there an ambulance on the apron?

The Beech King Air (OY-SHV) is on permanent mission as an air ambulance to the Greenland National Health System. It transports patients to Greenland’s largest hospital in Nuuk. Other aircraft are used for health transport when required. Be aware that friends and family of the patient may be watching these cameras, and for this reason please do not speculate on the condition of the patient

Where are the cameras mounted?

On the old control tower - see this video.

What is that chimney smoke?

The municipal waste incinerator is a good indicator of wind direction. This can help viewers determine which direction aircraft will be landing. Aircraft will generally land INTO the wind.

Can I see the Aurora Borealis on these cameras?

Amazing auroras are common during the long nights from October to April.

Are there other live cams in Greenland?

What languages are allowed?

While English is predominantly used in the chat rooms, you can use any language that can be translated by Google Translate. All other languages will be removed except for Greenlandic.

Discord Translator - Please Read

For everybody who uses a translator to participate in chat, we have now included an automated translator in all channels. Simply type whatever you want to say in your native language directly into chat and it will automatically get translated using Google Translate. All main languages should be supported, with the exception of Greenlandic. We are still investigating possibilities to also translate what is written in chat in English for you personally back into your native language. As the service isn't free and is charged by translated characters, we would like to ask you to only use it if you don't know how to write something in English, to ensure that sufficient capacity is available for those that need it.
